There will be a bonus fishbowl on Tuesday, March 17. The theme will be "anything goes." If you want a continuation of an earlier piece, or something totally new, that doesn't fit the usual themes, then now's your chance. Brainstorm in advance and jot down ideas for later. You can also request any favorite series, character, setting, etc.

Complete Guide To (57) Almost All Types Of Fiber Arts With Photos
This guide covers 57, and counting, types of fiber arts. They are broken down into two major categories:
1) String work, which includes spinning treatments, knotting, lace making, weaving and needlework.
2) Felt work, which includes sculpture, string felt, fur felt, wet felting and dry felting.
Fiber art, in its strictest sense, is fine art made with natural or synthetic fibers, such as wool and cotton, to acrylic and nylon, where the resulting work is valued for aesthetic and artistic expression over utility. You could add that the artisanship and materials used are also an essential part of the creation.

Today is mostly sunny and chilly.
I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 3/12/26 -- I planted the first 2 of 6 'Patriot' hostas in the purple-and-white garden. These have green leaves with a wide white margin.
EDIT 3/12/26 -- I planted 2 hostas in the forest garden.
EDIT 3/12/26 -- I planted the last 2 hostas in the log garden.
EDIT 3/12/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.
EDIT 3/12/26 -- I sprayed weed killer on the sprouting stumps in the parking lot.
I've seen a large mixed flock of sparrows and house finches. There are many more house finches now than last month.
EDIT 3/12/26 -- My partner Doug found someone to come out and remove stumps from the parking lot, path to the east edge of the yard, and in front of the shed. Also he's going to take down the last two saplings in front of the garage. We have price and a date for next Thursday. :D 3q3q3q!!!
I filled a bag with loose cans and other garbage that had collected in the parking lot. Still more to do, but it's a good start.
EDIT 3/12/26 -- I did more work around the patio.
EDIT 3/12/26 -- I filled another bag with loose cans from the parking lot. I think that's all the small stuff that I can clear quickly.
I am done for the night.

Lakota-Led AI Research at Bard College Explores Ethics Through Indigenous Knowledge
At Bard’s Wíhaŋble S’a Center, artist and scholar Suzanne Kite is rethinking artificial intelligence through Lakota knowledge—combining hide tanning, beadwork, dream research, and land-based practice to imagine a more ethical relationship with technology.
I'm reminded of Ash coding in ternary for Schrodinger's Heroes.

Reading
- I started reading We Need Your Art: Stop Messing Around and Make Something by Amie McNee. I bought it awhile back bc I follow Amie on ig, but I finally picked it up as hopefully an alternative for The Artist's Way that I can relate to better.
- I started reading Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. This is the current book for my work's DEI book club. It's something I've had on my tbr for years, so it's nice to have an excuse to read it finally! It's very interesting, though it is pretty long.
- I read some more on Demon Fish by Juliet Eilperin. Still haven't made it that far, but I am enjoying it so far.
- Ficwise, I'm still mostly reading JunDylan. Currently doing some rereading because I got stuck in a rut of fics that were ok but not satisfying :/
- The roommate and I watched more of MuTeLuv. We made it through the third story, which was thankfully much less gross in the second half. Fourth story was good, though I could have done without the het romance at the end, it really just did not work for me. Fifth story was good as well. It was nice to see JanJingjing for the first time, plus Leng! We've got two stories left now.
- The roommate and I watched more of Running Man Thailand. Second episode was also great. Loving Tay even more :D
- The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Cat for Cash. Oh, the family drama! I enjoyed that a lot actually. Already got some spoilers for the next episode that make me kind of sad though...
- The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Duang With You. The relationship is really progressing! Surprising since we're only halfway through, so I can't wait to see what drama there is to come lol
- The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Only Friends: Dream On. AouBoom are fucking killing it!! I am obsessed with their kiss in the car scene, jfc. The ArnoldTua storyline also has me very interested, especially with fucking Boston showing up and definitely having history with Tua.
- The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Yesterday. I am sooo curious about what happened with Lalit. Things seem to, somehow, be getting even more complicated on all fronts.
- The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of My Romance Scammer. Love seeing how much Tim and U are willing to do for their relationships. For U it's working so well! For Tim, well, preview shows it all falling apart and I am dreading and looking forward to it equally lol
- Lots of LYKN. They did the first two stops of their North American tour this week, so there have been a million fancams to watch. Kinda sad about the roommate and I deciding not to do the NYC show (standing room only for the whole theater was just not doable for us), but it is making me even more determined to make it work for the Chicago show in August.
- Nothing.
- Nothing.
- I have started doing some planning for what "courses" I want to study for the next quarter though. So far I'm keeping Thai, with some new resources added, and dropping Japanese for now, since Thai is more of an immediate desire to learn. Otherwise I'm thinking maybe song writing? Or embroidery, since I have a kit? Or drawing? Or something active, like dance or yoga? Or something about anthropology or environmentalism? Idk, I have a huge brainstorming list, so I really need to narrow it down and see what resources I can find.

This poem came out of the October 5, 2025 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from
dialecticdreamer. It also fills the "That felt weird." square in my 10-1-25 card for the Fall Festival Bingo. This poem has been sponsored by Anthony Barrette. It belongs to the Polychrome Heroics series.

When you're surfing the web & face a tsunami, make home under a bridge along the information highway
I hereby propose the term "The Under-net" (or "The Undernet") to refer to our preparation for and relationship with whatever (if anything) will be left for us in a future Internet dominated by unending, disingenuous, grifting slop.
This is an analysis of what's wrong with the Internet and some things we can do to improve it, as a form of resistance against corporate takeovers and enshittification.

Scientists finally reveal why mint feels cold
Scientists have captured the first close-up view of the body’s “cold sensor,” revealing how winter air—and even mint—tricks your brain into feeling cool.
Scientists have revealed how the body’s microscopic cold sensor, TRPM8, detects both chilly temperatures and the cooling effect of menthol. The discovery finally shows how the sensation of “cool” works at the molecular level—and could inspire new treatments for pain and eye disorders.

Extreme heat limits safe activity for millions of people worldwide
Extreme heat is now stopping people from doing simple daily tasks like walking, cleaning, or working outside.
A new study shows that climate warming has changed how much activity the human body can safely handle in hot weather.
Scientists found that since the 1950s, the number of hours each year when heat becomes dangerous for normal activity has increased sharply.
Yesterday it got up to 79℉, in Illinois, in early March. That is not normal. I rely on cool spring temperatures for yardwork such as planting bare-root trees and shrubs. I had to start my summer heat-coping skills, like avoiding direct sunlight and reducing workload. Plus we had to turn on the damn air conditioner, because recently when it was 76℉ outside, the house got considerably hotter and stayed that way through the wee hours. >_<
Summer, of course, has days when I can only go out for a few minutes at a time or not at all, and I worry about the air conditioner breaking because repairs take months to complete. It's life support for me, but other people don't consider that urgent.

A massive asteroid hit the North Sea and triggered a 330-foot tsunami
A long-running debate about the Silverpit Crater beneath the North Sea has finally been resolved. Scientists now confirm it formed when a roughly 160-meter asteroid struck the seabed about 43–46 million years ago. New seismic imaging and rare shocked minerals in rock samples provided the crucial proof. The impact would have sent a massive plume skyward and unleashed a tsunami over 100 meters (330 feet) high.
One thing I love about science is that occasionally it can really prove things.

Life is full of things which are hard or tedious or otherwise unpleasant that need doing anyhow. They help make the world go 'round, they improve skills, and they boost your sense of self-respect. But doing them still kinda sucks. It's all the more difficult to do those things when nobody appreciates it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our accomplishments and pat each other on the back.
What are some of the hard things you've done recently? What are some hard things you haven't gotten to yet, but need to do? Is there anything your online friends could do to make your hard things a little easier?
